Although most people consider blacksmithing a lost art, the imagination, ingenuity, and mystique of modern ironworking is flourishing rather than dying. In the mass production oriented society of our time, Blacksmithing is hardly a subject of any discussion, a subject for nostalgia at the most. The truth is that the Blacksmith was the cornerstone of a civilization utterly dependent on iron for tools, machines, hardware, ornaments, etc.
Ancient Greeks considered that the four elemental substances of our world were Fire, Air, Earth, and Water. Among the ancients, only the Blacksmith worked with all four elements. Once he applied his vision and imagination to the new iron substance, he developed techniques and invented the tools required to bend it to his will. Nowadays the Blacksmith-Fabricator is using gas forges, power hammers, presses, and many new devices but the basics of Blacksmithing and hand-forging are the same like hundreds maybe thousands of years ago and is unlikely to change any time soon.
There was and will always be a demand for artistic Blacksmithing as long as the human mind is alive and free to imagine and express itself in artistic ways that were unatainable in the past. Come visit our shop and we will take you back in time in the fascinating world of the Blacksmith. |
